A Breath of Snow and Ashes

Diana Gabaldon

Rating: 5 out of 5.

This is the sixth book in the Outlander series and just like every other instalment I fell deeply in love with each characters development and really enjoyed reading about life in the 1700’s on Fraser’s Ridge. Many life altering events take place for the clan on the ridge in this book and it’s amazing to see them overcome these traumatic events – all while sitting on the edge of your seat waiting to find out what happens next.

I just ordered the next book in the series An Echo in Bone on Amazon so it’ll come in the next couple of days and I’m so excited!! The seventh novel in the series follows the characters as they enter into the America Revolution. I love love love historical fiction so I have high expectations for this one!

home body

Rupi Kaur

Rating: 4 out of 5.

This girl. She speaks straight into my soul. This instalment is so raw and ground moving that it will definitely stir up some uncomfortable feelings but that’s what it’s meant to do – so you can feel them and then grow from them. It’s gotten some negative reviews because of the length of the poems are shorter than her previous two collections but I like a nice quick read sometimes.

Self-care for the real world

Nadia Narain & Katia Narain Phillips

Rating: 5 out of 5.

If you read one self-help book your entire life I highly highly suggest making it this one. This book introduced me to ways of thinking and ways of living that has impacted my day-to-day and my overall mental health. The most beneficial part to this book is the ideas they present aren’t completely drastic, overwhelming, and scary. The changes that they suggest you make within your life are very small do-able things that eventually will add up to the bigger picture. They also include some of their favourite feel-good healthy food recipes for you to try throughout!

The Birth House

Amy McKay

Rating: 4 out of 5.

I love how deep the main character was developed, you can’t help but feel for her. It’s also great to read how she grows and really finds herself throughout the novel as she blossoms into a midwife. Although I love Dora [our main character] I wish that the book had focused more on her journey to becoming a midwife than her social life and the politics of her marriage. It was an easy read and a praised debut for Amy McKay so I’d still recommend it!

Little Fires Everywhere

Celeste Ng

Rating: 5 out of 5.

This book definitely lives up to the hype. I watched the mini-series that was released starring Reece Witherspoon and Kerri Washington and while that was pure genius I liked being able to read the characters thoughts. It made things make more sense and filled in any blanks that they missed when they depicted the story for television.

This novel will have you questioning your opinion on taboo subjects while on the edge of your seat waiting to find out how things end. It’s a true page turner that talks about real issues and sheds light on the kind of racism that is subtle yet still so damaging – an issue we still face today. The fact that this story is so amazing on its own but then also highlights important topics within society makes it a winner all the way around.

Are you participating in the reading challenge this year? I’d love to hear your thoughts on these novels and I’m always open to suggestions for new reads! Drop a comment down below!
