Let’s be honest, we’ve all been living in lounge wear the past year and frankly I’m totally here for it. Not only has it made my life easier when it comes to “getting dressed for the day” but it’s also allowed me to reevaluate my buying habits when it comes to fashion. I’ve been really determined to get organized this year and cleaning up my wardrobe is a huge part of that! With Spring just a few months away I’m ready for the refresh that it typically brings and I’ve found a few ways that makes it feel like less of a chore as well as essential things to consider when you’re deciding to purchase, keep, or sell.

When’s the last time you wore it?
Since my outfits have been really repetitive lately there’s pieces of my wardrobe that I forgot I even had. If you find that you’re in the same situation then it’s definitely time for a closet clear-out! When you start to go through each item, a good rule of thumb to follow is the quarterly method. The way this works is so simple- all you have to do is determine when you last wore said item. Since fashion trends tend to switch up every four-ish months it’s common that without even knowing we phase out certain pieces that we were once obsessed with! If you haven’t worn a specific item in the last three to four months its time to say goodbye!
I used to be the “I have to keep this because I know I’ll wear it again someday” type of gal. I liked to have a lot of options but on top of that some pieces can be really sentimental- like the outfit I wore on the day Tristan asked me to marry her. Instead of keeping those sentimental items that [lets face it] you won’t wear again and will just take up space, take a picture if you love it but don’t wear it and then get rid of it. A picture can last forever!
Where to sell your unwanted clothing
I’ve used pretty much every selling platform to post my unwanted clothing- marketplace, kijiji, Etsy, depop.. and let me tell you, nothing compares to how easy and efficient Poshmark makes selling your used apparel. They take care of the shipping cost for you which to me is honestly the biggest weight lifted off of my shoulders! All you have to do is print the pre-paid packaging label, package the item, and drop it off at your local post office!
The funds that you receive from your sales can either be sent to your PayPal account or you can use it towards the purchase of an item within the Poshmark app. This feature is the holy grail when it comes to updating your wardrobe- when you get rid of an item [or multiple] you can then take your earnings from that sale and invest in a higher quality staple piece by shopping within the “new with tags” category.
Sellers on Poshmark have adapted the quarterly method and tend to do a closet clear-out every four months which is pretty cool because if there was a item that you were dying to have but missed, there’s a good chance it’ll be on posh! You can shop my closet < here > 🙂
Fast fashion vs staple pieces
This is really where shopping quality over quantity comes into play. We all love those 75% off sales at Forever 21, Urban Planet, H&M- but how long do the clothes last? In my experience they ball up after just a few washes and stretch out way too easily. In lieu of buying an abundance of cheap items and wearing each a handful of times, invest your money in a product of higher quality that will stand the test of time and can be incorporated into many different looks.
Even though you’re buying products that can be considered high-end it doesn’t mean that you have to break the bank in the process. It’s still a good idea to go into a wardrobe refresh with a budget in mind, setting a maximum amount to spend either on a specific item [I don’t spend more than $150 on a sweatshirt for example] or the total amount. Focus on investing in items that you wear weekly if not daily because that’s where you’ll get the most bang for your buck! It’s worth it in my opinion to splurge on an item that is comfortable, can work with different colours and can be dressed up or down. With all that being said, would you rather splurge or save? Let me know in the comment section below!
I hope this post motivates you to revamp your wardrobe and in the words of Marie Kondo get rid of anything that no longer brings you joy!
Xx
